A British Airways flight from London to Chicago declared an emergency while flying over Ireland, prompting the aircraft to transmit the 7700 emergency code and descend to around 9,000 feet, according to flight-tracking,
British Airways flight BA295 was travelling towards Chicago when it triggered the emergency alert while crossing Irish airspace, according to flight-tracking platform Flightradar24.
The Boeing aircraft's emergency transponder signal and subsequent descent drew attention from aviation observers. However, the exact reason for the emergency declaration was not immediately known.
The 7700 transponder code is used by pilots to notify air traffic controllers of a general emergency requiring priority assistance. The code itself does not indicate the nature of the problem, which can include technical issues, medical emergencies or other operational concerns.
British Airways had not immediately provided details about the incident or confirmed the reason for the emergency declaration. Further information about the aircraft's condition and its subsequent flight path was awaited.
The incident occurred days after a separate aviation emergency involving flydubai flight FZ1073, which diverted following an alleged confrontation inside the cockpit during a flight from Dubai to Tel Aviv.
That aircraft reportedly transmitted both the 7700 emergency code and the 7500 code, the latter being used to indicate unlawful interference or a possible hijacking. The Boeing 737 MAX 8 was carrying 174 passengers and crew during the September 30 incident.
According to reports, the aircraft entered a rapid descent following the alleged cockpit altercation. The injured captain was reportedly able to regain control with assistance from passengers and off-duty pilots travelling on board, after which the aircraft diverted to Tabuk in Saudi Arabia and landed safely.
UAE authorities later described the flydubai incident as a terrorist attack and launched an investigation. The co-pilot involved was subsequently taken into UAE custody.
The British Airways emergency is understood to be unrelated to the flydubai incident, with no indication so far of any connection between the two cases.
Further information from British Airways and aviation authorities is expected as the circumstances surrounding BA295's emergency declaration are established.
