The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) staged a protest outside the Congress office in Ranchi on Monday over a controversial remark by Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge concerning Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s father.
The demonstration was led by Jharkhand BJP president Aditya Sahu and Leader of Opposition in the state Assembly Babulal Marandi. BJP workers marched towards the Congress office carrying party flags and placards, raising slogans against Kharge and the Congress.
Tensions briefly escalated as BJP and Congress workers came face-to-face outside the office. Anticipating a possible confrontation, the district administration deployed a large police contingent and erected barricades around the premises.
Some BJP protesters attempted to cross the barricades and approach the Congress office, triggering heated exchanges with police personnel. Congress workers also raised counter-slogans against the BJP, with some climbing the barricades before police intervened and brought the situation under control.
The protesters demanded that Kharge apologise to the Prime Minister, arguing that political leaders should maintain decorum while making public statements.
Marandi Criticises Congress Leadership
Addressing the gathering, Marandi alleged that Congress leaders had repeatedly made objectionable remarks about Prime Minister Modi and had now extended their comments to his parents.
He said political disagreements should be expressed within the limits of civility and public decorum.
The BJP has announced a nationwide campaign involving demonstrations and protests outside Congress offices over the controversy. The Ranchi demonstration formed part of this broader campaign.
Despite the heightened security and exchanges between party workers, both sides continued their respective protests. Police personnel remained deployed in the area to prevent further escalation.
