The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Monday held protests at its headquarters and in several states, demanding an apology from Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge over remarks he made about Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
BJP leaders and workers demonstrated in multiple cities, raising slogans against Kharge and calling on him to withdraw his comments and apologise.
In Delhi, BJP state president Harsh Malhotra, along with other party leaders, staged a protest outside Kharge’s residence. Demonstrations were also reported in Bihar, Jammu, Kolkata, Bengaluru and Telangana’s MJ Market.
Protests Across Multiple States
In Bihar, BJP workers and leaders took out a protest march, condemning Kharge’s remarks and demanding an apology. Some demonstrators also burnt an effigy of the Congress president.
In Kolkata, BJP workers marched with party flags and an effigy of Kharge, raising slogans against him over the controversy.
In Bengaluru, BJP leaders gathered at Freedom Park to protest against the Congress chief’s comments concerning the Prime Minister’s father. Police detained some of the protesting leaders during the demonstration.
BJP workers in Jammu also staged protests, burning posters of Kharge and demanding that he withdraw his remarks and apologise.
In Telangana, party leaders and workers assembled at MJ Market to register their opposition to the Congress president’s comments, joining similar demonstrations held elsewhere in the country.
Remarks at Patna Event Trigger Political Row
The protests followed Kharge’s address at a Congress programme in Patna on Sunday, organised to mark the birth anniversary of Sri Krishna Singh, Bihar’s first Chief Minister.
During the event, a person in the audience reportedly interrupted Kharge, saying that Prime Minister Modi would not leave power.
In response, Kharge said, “Modi ka baap bhi jayega” (Even Modi’s father will have to go). According to reports, the Congress president repeated the remark several times, triggering criticism from BJP leaders over the language used in reference to the Prime Minister.
The BJP’s demonstrations on Monday centred on its demand that Kharge apologise for the statement, escalating the political confrontation between the two parties.
