Uttar Pradesh Minister Anil Rajbhar on Tuesday expressed confidence that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) would secure victory in all 11 seats in the Uttar Pradesh Legislative Council elections.

Rajbhar said the BJP had received considerable support across the constituencies and predicted that its candidates would win by substantial margins.

“The initial trends are in favour of BJP candidates. There is no doubt that the BJP is set to win all seats by a huge margin,” Rajbhar said, adding that the party had maintained a strong presence in the constituencies and witnessed voters’ support for its candidates.

The results are being closely monitored as Uttar Pradesh prepares for its next Assembly elections, expected to take place in February or March next year. The MLC elections are seen as an important political contest ahead of the state polls.

Polling Recorded 55.24 Per Cent Turnout

Voting for the 11 Legislative Council seats took place on October 23, with a voter turnout of 55.24 per cent.

The seats comprise five graduates’ constituencies — Lucknow, Agra, Meerut, Varanasi and Allahabad-Jhansi — and six teachers’ constituencies covering Lucknow, Agra, Meerut, Varanasi, Gorakhpur-Faizabad and Bareilly-Moradabad.

Polling day witnessed tensions in Gorakhpur, where workers of the BJP and the Samajwadi Party (SP) clashed amid allegations from both sides that the other had attempted to influence the electoral process.

In Agra, repolling was recommended at three booths following allegations of irregularities.

BJP Aims for a Clean Sweep

Of the 11 outgoing members, the BJP currently holds six seats, while the SP has three. The remaining two seats are held by Independents.

The BJP is seeking to win all 11 constituencies, with the ruling party highlighting the work of the Narendra Modi-led Central government and the Yogi Adityanath-led Uttar Pradesh government as part of its electoral pitch.

The elections are being held ahead of the expiry of the sitting members’ terms on December 6.

The SP, meanwhile, has fielded three incumbent members — Ashutosh Sinha, Dr Man Singh Yadav and Lal Bihari Yadav — as it seeks to retain its representation in the Legislative Council.

For the opposition party, the results could provide an indication of its political standing ahead of the Assembly elections. A strong performance would offer a boost as it seeks to challenge the BJP, while a poor showing could complicate its efforts to build momentum before the state-wide contest.

Rajbhar’s prediction of a BJP sweep remains a party claim, with the final outcome dependent on the completion of counting and the official declaration of results.
