Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leaders on Monday criticised Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge for his controversial remarks about Prime Minister Narendra Modi and demanded an immediate apology.
Uttar Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister Brajesh Pathak said remarks by Congress leaders, including Kharge and Rahul Gandhi, concerning the Prime Minister’s parents were contrary to India’s cultural values and traditions.
“This goes against India's culture, values and traditions. The people of the country will never accept this. They should apologise,” Pathak said.
He further alleged that the Congress was frustrated by its inability to return to power and described the remarks as a sign of what he termed the party’s “mental bankruptcy”.
BJP MP Manoj Tiwari also condemned Kharge’s comments, calling them inappropriate and alleging that they reflected a lack of decorum within the Congress.
Tiwari said Kharge, as the national president of a major political party, should be held accountable for his remarks and urged him to apologise immediately.
He also alleged that Congress leaders had previously made objectionable comments about Modi and his late mother, as well as used other offensive descriptions against the Prime Minister.
“This is the Congress' frustration. Mallikarjun Kharge should apologise immediately,” Tiwari said, warning that voters could respond politically to the controversy.
BJP MLA Says Remarks Have Crossed Limits of Decorum
BJP MLA Sunil Sharma also criticised the Congress president, alleging that the party had crossed the limits of acceptable political discourse out of disappointment and frustration.
Sharma said the remarks were particularly concerning because they had come from a senior leader who heads the Congress.
He added that such language from a party president raised questions about the standards of conduct maintained by the organisation.
What Triggered the Political Row?
The controversy followed a remark Kharge made at an event in Patna, Bihar, on Sunday. During his speech, a man in the audience reportedly interrupted him, saying that Prime Minister Modi would not relinquish power unless there was a rebellion.
In response, Kharge used the phrase “Modi ka baap bhi jayega”, which can be translated as “Even Modi’s father will have to go”, repeating it three times from the dais.
The comments triggered a political confrontation, with BJP leaders accusing the Congress chief of insulting the Prime Minister and his late father.
The Congress president’s remarks and the subsequent BJP criticism have added to the political exchanges between the two parties, with the BJP demanding an apology over the incident.
