BJP leader Ramesh Yadav was allegedly robbed of cash and valuables worth around Rs 50 lakh after masked intruders broke into his farmhouse in Kanpur and tied him up, police said.

The incident took place hours after he assumed a new organisational responsibility in the party’s Uttar Pradesh unit.

According to Yadav’s statement to the police, the unidentified assailants entered his farmhouse in the Sen-Paschim Para area around midnight, overpowered him and restrained his hands and feet before searching the premises and fleeing with the valuables.

The farmhouse is located around 15 kilometres from Kanpur city. Police officials reached the spot during the night and launched an investigation into the incident.

Yadav was appointed state secretary of the BJP’s Pichhda Morcha, the party’s Backward Classes Wing, on October 1. He formally assumed charge in Lucknow on October 12 and returned to Kanpur later that evening, before the alleged robbery.

He has previously served three terms as a block in-charge, a position also held by his wife, Shashi Yadav. Yadav contested the 2022 Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections from the Bithoor constituency on a Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) ticket before joining the BJP and receiving a state-level organisational role.

Senior police officers, including Joint Police Commissioner Dr Vipin Tada and Deputy Commissioner of Police (South) Deependra Nath Chaudhary, visited the farmhouse to assess the situation and supervise the investigation.

Investigators are examining CCTV footage from the property and nearby areas to trace the suspects and establish their movements.

Police have also questioned several people associated with the farmhouse. According to reports, around 14 people, including four security guards, four gunmen and a driver, have been brought in for questioning.

The suspects have not yet been identified, and police efforts are underway to trace those responsible and recover the stolen property.
