West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari has claimed that the BJP's strong performance in the Nandigram and Rejinagar Assembly bypolls indicates a shift in support among sections of the state's minority electorate.

Speaking to reporters at the state secretariat, Nabanna, Adhikari said BJP candidates had secured substantial leads in both constituencies, including at several polling booths with significant minority populations. The final results were yet to be declared at the time of his remarks.

According to Adhikari, Opposition parties had previously alleged that a BJP government would threaten the religious freedom and security of minority communities. He argued that the latest electoral trends challenged those claims and reflected support for the party's emphasis on development.

The Chief Minister said Bengali-speaking Muslim voters, in particular, were increasingly willing to support the BJP and would not necessarily be influenced by what he described as politically motivated campaigns against the party.

Adhikari also attributed the BJP's performance to the state government's work during its first five months in office, claiming that sections of the minority electorate had begun to recognise the benefits of its policies.

He specifically referred to the Annapurna Yojana, asserting that women who had benefited from the scheme had supported the BJP in the bypolls alongside their family members. These claims were made by the Chief Minister and were not independently established by the initial electoral trends.

The Chief Minister also criticised Aam Janata Unnayan Party (AJUP) founder and legislator Humayun Kabir over his statements on social media. Adhikari claimed that Kabir's remarks had faced opposition within his own community and said some residents of Rejinagar were now looking towards the state government for development.

Reiterating his assurances to the constituency, Adhikari said the government would pursue development projects in Rejinagar, including a new college, a bridge, improvements to the local hospital and the gradual expansion of industrial activity.

The bypolls in Nandigram and Rejinagar have drawn attention to the BJP's electoral position in West Bengal and the political contest over minority voter support. However, the broader implications of the results will depend on the final vote counts and a detailed assessment of constituency-level voting patterns.
