The Assam government has set a target to cover 3.49 lakh Kisan Credit Card (KCC) accounts under its farmer loan resolution framework, with loans worth ₹1,741.15 crore already covered under the initiative.
In a post on X on Friday, Sarma highlighted the state's efforts to strengthen agricultural credit and expand farmers' access to institutional financing, describing the agricultural community as central to Assam's development goals.
The loan resolution framework is intended to help eligible farmers address overdue loans and regain access to formal credit facilities. According to the information accompanying the Chief Minister's post, the costs associated with resolving the loans are to be shared among the state government, farmers and banks.
The government has not specified a timeline for covering all 3.49 lakh targeted accounts or provided a district-wise breakdown of the beneficiaries.
**Focus on Agricultural Credit and Financial Inclusion**
The Kisan Credit Card scheme is designed to provide farmers with timely access to credit for cultivation and allied agricultural activities. The financing helps meet expenses related to farming operations and other agricultural requirements.
Addressing overdue loans and restoring access to institutional credit can help eligible farmers obtain financing for subsequent cropping seasons and reduce their reliance on informal sources of borrowing.
The Assam government's initiative highlights three broad priorities for farmer welfare: improved access to credit, stronger infrastructure and expanded economic opportunities.
These measures are intended to support agricultural activities, strengthen rural livelihoods and improve farmers' access to formal financial services.
Agriculture remains an important source of livelihood across Assam, making affordable financing and rural infrastructure key considerations in the state's development planning.
While the government has outlined the scale of the loan resolution initiative, further details on implementation, beneficiary eligibility and the schedule for covering the targeted accounts are yet to be announced.
The programme forms part of the state's broader efforts to address farmers' credit difficulties and strengthen their access to institutional finance.
