Assam is stepping up efforts to promote bamboo as an industrial and economic resource, with Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announcing plans to introduce a newly developed bamboo bicycle in parks across Guwahati,
Sarma said he recently rode the bicycle, whose main structure is made entirely from bamboo and has received certification from the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS).
The bicycles are expected to be placed in several Guwahati parks in the coming days, allowing residents to use them and provide feedback before the product is formally launched.
According to the Chief Minister, the public trial is intended to gather views on the bicycle's design, comfort, usability and performance, while also demonstrating how Assam's locally available bamboo can be transformed into modern products.
Sarma said bamboo has significant economic potential, pointing to the large number of products and industrial applications that can be developed from the material. He said bamboo could be used for products and processes ranging from methanol and aviation turbine fuel to reinforced structures.
The Chief Minister also highlighted the Union government's decision to classify bamboo as grass rather than a tree, saying the policy change had created greater opportunities for cultivation, processing and commercial use.
Assam has substantial bamboo resources and has been seeking to expand industries based on the material as part of efforts to generate livelihoods and increase the value derived from local resources.
The bamboo bicycle is being presented as one example of how a traditional resource can be adapted for contemporary consumer use. The Guwahati trial is expected to provide practical feedback before the bicycle is introduced more widely.
Beyond mobility products, bamboo is increasingly being explored for applications in construction, manufacturing and other industrial sectors, with policymakers and businesses looking at locally sourced materials as alternatives for a range of uses.
The bicycle initiative is therefore part of a broader push to increase the commercial and industrial utilisation of bamboo while showcasing products developed from Assam's indigenous resources.
