Assam Police have arrested two people in Hailakandi district after recovering a consignment of suspected Yaba tablets estimated to be worth around Rs 60 lakh, officials said.
The seizure was made during an operation targeting the illegal movement and trafficking of narcotic substances in the district. Police reportedly recovered 816.9 grams of suspected Yaba tablets during the action.
The two arrested individuals have been identified as Baharul Alam Majumdar and Chayekh Hussain Laskar. According to officials, the pair were intercepted by police and taken into custody after the suspected narcotics were allegedly found in their possession.
Yaba is a synthetic drug generally containing methamphetamine and caffeine and is frequently trafficked through parts of India's northeastern region. Authorities have placed the estimated street value of the seized consignment at approximately Rs 60 lakh.
A case has been registered in connection with the seizure, while investigators are working to determine where the consignment originated and where it was allegedly intended to be delivered.
Police are also examining whether the two suspects have links to a wider narcotics network operating across Assam and neighbouring states. Investigators are questioning the accused to gather information about the alleged supply chain and identify other individuals who may have been involved.
Authorities are also looking into financial transactions and other evidence connected with the seized consignment as part of the investigation.
The operation comes amid increased enforcement activity against the trafficking of synthetic drugs and other narcotic substances across Assam. Police have stepped up surveillance and checking in areas and transport routes considered vulnerable to narcotics movement.
Further details are expected as the investigation continues. Police said legal action would be taken against anyone found to be involved in the trafficking or distribution of the prohibited substances.
