Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma extended birthday greetings to former President Ram Nath Kovind, recalling his contribution to public life and his interest in the legacy of Ahom general Lachit Barphukan.
In a post on X, Sarma described Kovind as an example of courage and dedication, noting his journey from the legal profession to politics and eventually to the country’s highest constitutional office.
The Assam Chief Minister also recalled Kovind’s participation in important events during his tenure as President, particularly the celebrations marking the 400th birth anniversary of Lachit Barphukan.
Sarma said Kovind had shown particular interest in the life and legacy of the celebrated Ahom military commander during the commemorative events. He also prayed for Kovind’s long life and continued service to the country.
Kovind served as the 14th President of India from 2017 to 2022. Born on October 1, 1945, in Paraunkh village in Uttar Pradesh’s Kanpur Dehat district, he trained as a lawyer and practised at the Delhi High Court and the Supreme Court.
He entered active politics and served as a Rajya Sabha member for two terms between 1994 and 2006. Kovind was appointed Governor of Bihar in 2015 and held the position until 2017, when he was elected President.
Kovind also attended programmes associated with the 400th birth anniversary of Lachit Barphukan. The Ahom commander is remembered in Assam for his military leadership, including his role in the 1671 Battle of Saraighat.
