Counting of votes for the first-ever Silchar Municipal Corporation election in Assam began at 8 a.m. on Tuesday, with ballots from 40 contested wards being counted at the Indian Society for Technical Training (ISTT).

Elaborate security and administrative arrangements have been put in place at the counting centre to ensure a smooth and orderly process.

The counting is being conducted across seven rooms, with each room equipped with 14 counting tables. Officials said three to four tables have been assigned to each ward depending on the volume of votes to be counted.

The counting process is expected to be completed within four rounds. Wards with comparatively fewer voters may require only three rounds for the results to be finalised.

The Silchar Municipal Corporation has 42 wards in total. However, candidates backed by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) have already been elected unopposed in two wards, leaving 40 wards where votes are being counted on Tuesday.

Polling for the civic election was held on October 3, with around 71 per cent of nearly 2.7 lakh registered voters casting their ballots.

The results will determine the first elected representatives of the newly constituted Silchar Municipal Corporation and establish the political composition of the civic body.

Security has been strengthened around the ISTT counting centre and at other key locations across the city. Authorities have also introduced measures to regulate movement around the venue and prevent any disruption during the counting process.

Officials said adequate arrangements have been made to ensure that the counting remains transparent, peaceful and orderly.

The election is being closely watched as it marks the first civic poll since the establishment of the Silchar Municipal Corporation.

The results across the 40 contested wards will provide an indication of voter preferences in Silchar and determine which political groups and candidates will form the corporation's elected body.

As counting continues through successive rounds, political parties and candidates are closely monitoring ward-wise trends as the results begin to take shape.
