Union Home Minister Amit Shah and Defence Minister Rajnath Singh paid tribute to Mahatma Gandhi on his birth anniversary, highlighting his emphasis on truth, non-violence, self-reliance and public service.

Shah, in a post on X, reflected on Gandhi's understanding of Swaraj, saying the Mahatma viewed it as more than simply the achievement of political freedom. According to Shah, Gandhi regarded Swaraj as a foundation for self-respect and self-reliance.

Shah also highlighted Gandhi's emphasis on remaining connected to India's cultural and social roots. He referred to the Mahatma's advocacy of Swadeshi, Indian languages, indigenous culture and cleanliness as important elements of his vision for society.

Remembering Gandhi's legacy, Shah said the freedom leader demonstrated through his life that dedication to one's actions and purity of thought could help overcome seemingly difficult challenges. He also recalled Gandhi's message of truth, non-violence and compassion.

Singh, meanwhile, described Gandhi's principles as an enduring source of inspiration in India and abroad. In his message, the Defence Minister said Gandhi's commitment to truth and non-violence gave a new direction to India's freedom movement.

Singh also pointed to Gandhi's emphasis on peace, tolerance, equality and national unity, saying these values continue to hold relevance.

According to Singh, Gandhi drew deeply from India's cultural and civilisational traditions and helped communicate the country's spiritual and moral values to audiences around the world.

He further highlighted Gandhi's ideas of Swadeshi, self-reliance and Sarvodaya, along with his focus on social harmony, cleanliness and service to the public.

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath also marked Gandhi's birth anniversary, paying tribute to the freedom leader and extending his greetings to people in the state on the International Day of Non-Violence.

Adityanath said Gandhi's commitment to truth and non-violence helped communicate the message of India's freedom struggle across the world. He also said Gandhi's simplicity, ideals and emphasis on indigenous practices continue to offer guidance towards the goal of a self-reliant and developed India.
