The Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) has achieved its target of planting 50 lakh trees under its Mission Five Million Trees campaign, with Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel taking part in a plantation programme at Bhadaj on Thursday.
The drive was organised as part of the state government's Seva, Sankalp and Samarpan Abhiyan. Patel participated alongside Cabinet Minister Rushikesh Patel, Ahmedabad Mayor Hitesh Barot, elected representatives and senior civic officials.
Before joining the plantation activity, the Chief Minister interacted with citizens present at the site. The Bhadaj plantation area covers around 85,000 square metres, with more than one lakh trees already planted across approximately 66,600 square metres.
The site currently features more than 38 varieties of trees, while the civic body also plans to develop a Triphala Van in the area. The plantation is part of AMC's broader efforts to create large-scale green spaces and increase tree cover across Ahmedabad.
The programme was attended by MP Dinesh Makwana, Deputy Mayor Anju Shah, Standing Committee Chairman Kamlesh Patel, political leader Prerak Shah, local MLAs, Municipal Commissioner Banchhanidhi Pani, senior officials, AMC office-bearers and a large number of citizens.
The AMC launched its tree plantation initiative as Mission Million Trees in 2019. The plantation target was subsequently increased over the years, eventually reaching 50 lakh trees under this year's Mission Five Million Trees campaign.
With the latest milestone, the civic body said it has successfully completed the target of planting 50 lakh trees.
The Bhadaj site has emerged as one of the major locations for the AMC's afforestation activities. The presence of several varieties of trees, along with the proposed Triphala Van, is expected to create a diverse plantation landscape at the site.
The Bhadaj plantation drive also builds on an earlier record achieved at the location. The site holds a Guinness World Record for the largest Miyawaki plantation completed in one hour.
In July, the AMC planted 3,61,617 saplings at Bhadaj within an hour, setting the record as part of the city's continuing efforts to expand its green cover.
The record-setting plantation involved participation from AMC officials, school board representatives, police personnel, NCC cadets, NGOs, educational institutions, social organisations and citizens.
The latest plantation programme at Bhadaj brought together government representatives, civic authorities and residents as the AMC marked the completion of its 50-lakh-tree plantation target.
