Adani Green Energy Ltd (AGEL) has increased its operational Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) capacity at Khavda in Gujarat to 6.63 gigawatt-hours (GWh), up from 3.55 GWh in June 2026, marking a major expansion.
The company said its operational storage capacity now represents more than half of India's total operational BESS capacity, estimated at around 12.6 GWh.
“Reaching 6.63 GWh of operational battery storage in just 14 months is a significant milestone for AGEL and India’s clean energy transition. At this scale, storage can make renewable power firmer, more reliable and dispatchable when the grid needs it,” said Sagar Adani, Executive Director of Adani Green Energy.
“As India’s power demand grows, we will continue to scale energy storage solutions, both battery and pumped storage, to support a more resilient, lower-carbon grid,” he added.
According to the company, the 6.63 GWh installation can store enough clean energy to power around two million homes for a day. It can also help meet peak electricity demand in cities such as Nagpur, Patna and Visakhapatnam for several hours.
The storage facility has a capacity comparable to the batteries in more than 150,000 mid-sized electric vehicles and can hold enough energy to meet nearly twice the estimated daily electricity requirement of the Delhi Metro, highlighting the scale of the installation.
AGEL said the expansion will further support the integration of renewable power into the electricity grid by allowing energy generated from renewable sources to be stored and dispatched when required. The company also said the development reinforces Khavda's position as the world's largest operational battery energy storage installation at a single location.
The BESS forms part of AGEL's broader renewable energy development at Khavda, where the company is building a 30 GW renewable energy plant across 538 square kilometres of barren land.
The facility uses lithium-ion battery technology along with an Energy Management System and automated telemetry to control charging and discharging, improve operational efficiency and provide grid-support services. Battery storage can help strengthen grid stability, manage periods of peak demand, reduce renewable energy curtailment and ensure power generated from renewable sources is available when needed.
AGEL said it plans to add more than 10 GWh of BESS capacity during FY 2026-27 and is targeting a total storage capacity of 50 GWh over the next five years.
