Samajwadi Party (SP) Maharashtra president and MLA Abu Asim Azmi on Friday expressed confidence that his party would win the 2027 Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections, claiming public dissatisfaction with the BJP Government.
Speaking to reporters, Azmi said the SP was preparing its electoral strategy and hoped the BJP would lose power in the state.
“Their days are numbered. The entire country is fed up with them. Only a few days remain, so let them say whatever they want. The Samajwadi Party is certain to win the 2027 elections. We are preparing our strategy, and we hope they will have to step down and leave their positions,” he said.
Azmi also criticised the BJP-led government in Uttar Pradesh, alleging that the state was facing serious law and order problems and that several sections of society were struggling.
He claimed that farmers were distressed, young people were facing difficulties and schools were shutting down. Azmi accused the state government of failing to maintain law and order and alleged that its policies had added to public hardship.
SP expresses confidence amid Legislative Council polls
Earlier on Friday, senior SP leader Ram Gopal Yadav also expressed confidence in his party's prospects in the ongoing Uttar Pradesh Legislative Council elections, citing what he described as a favourable response from voters in several constituencies.
After casting his vote in Etawah, Yadav said the response appeared encouraging for the SP in Etawah, Firozabad, Agra and Aligarh.
He expressed confidence that both party candidates would win, naming Akash Agarwal as the SP candidate for the Teachers' constituency and voicing optimism about the party's prospects in the Graduates' constituency.
Voting underway for 11 MLC seats
Polling was underway on Friday for 11 seats in the Uttar Pradesh Legislative Council, covering six Teachers' constituencies and five Graduates' constituencies.
A total of 152 candidates are contesting the elections, with 2,697 polling stations established for approximately 14.28 lakh eligible voters. Voting is scheduled to continue until 4 p.m., while counting is set for October 27.
Elections are not being held in Kanpur, Kanpur Dehat and Unnao, where the terms of the respective Members of the Legislative Council extend until 2029.
The next Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections are expected to take place in February-March 2027 to elect all 403 members of the state Legislative Assembly.
