Trinamool Congress general secretary and Lok Sabha MP Abhishek Banerjee has accused the police administration of deliberately planting more than Rs 1.02 crore at a party office in Sarisha.

The police recovered Rs 1,02,79,000 from the party office. However, Banerjee rejected the police's account and alleged that the cash had been deliberately placed there to fabricate evidence.

The Diamond Harbour Police had reportedly received information about the money during the interrogation of Sumit Roy, an aide to Banerjee who is currently in police custody in connection with a multi-crore soil-theft case registered at Kalitala-Ashuti Police Station.

Banerjee Accuses Police of Fabricating Evidence

In a social media post late Wednesday night, Banerjee claimed that the cash seizure was part of a deliberate attempt to manipulate the investigation. He also alleged that the party office had been vandalised by people backed by the BJP around six months ago.

Describing the alleged planting of cash as an attempt to subvert justice, Banerjee said the property had subsequently become a crime scene under police investigation.

He warned that those allegedly involved in the incident, including officials acting under political influence, would be held accountable.

Banerjee further cautioned the police administration against assuming that political backing, official positions or the misuse of police powers would provide protection from prosecution. He maintained that legal accountability would extend to everyone involved, irrespective of their rank or political affiliation.

Police Investigating Source of Seized Cash

On Monday, the Diamond Harbour Police district confirmed that the premises where the cash was recovered belonged to the Trinamool Congress. However, the police did not clarify who was responsible for operating the office.

The source of the money and the reason for keeping such a large amount of cash at the party premises remain unclear.

Investigators are attempting to establish where the money came from. The police's preliminary investigation has indicated a possible connection between the seized cash and the soil-theft case registered at Kalitala-Ashuti Police Station.

The investigation is ongoing, and the circumstances surrounding the recovery remain under examination.
