A 17-year-old girl from Pakistan-occupied Jammu and Kashmir was detained by the Indian Army after she crossed the Line of Control (LoC) into Jammu and Kashmir's Rajouri district, officials said on Saturday.
The girl was intercepted in the Nowshera sector after troops deployed in the Lam area detected suspicious movement close to the LoC during routine surveillance.
Army personnel detained the girl and conducted an initial round of questioning before handing her over to the local police. She has been identified as S. Azeem, daughter of Mohd Azeem and a resident of Khuiretta in PoJK.
The girl is currently being questioned by Nowshera police as authorities work to establish the circumstances under which she entered Indian territory.
During preliminary questioning, she reportedly told authorities that she had crossed the LoC inadvertently. Officials are continuing to verify her account and conduct necessary identity and background checks.
Security personnel routinely detain individuals who unintentionally cross the LoC in Jammu and Kashmir before handing them over to local authorities for verification. Once investigations establish that a crossing was accidental, repatriation is generally coordinated through designated crossing points and established channels between the two sides.
The Army uses surveillance systems along the LoC to detect such movements and has procedures in place for dealing with civilians who may have crossed inadvertently, including people who become disoriented while tending livestock or working near the border.
Further action in such cases can involve coordination with Pakistani military authorities through established communication channels, including hotlines and flag meetings.
Repatriations, when approved, are carried out through designated crossing points such as Chakan Da Bagh in Poonch, Kaman Aman Setu in the Uri sector and the Tithwal area, in coordination with civil and military officials.
