The 12th BRICS Parliamentary Forum began on Monday at the Central Hall of Samvidhan Sadan in the Parliament House complex in New Delhi, bringing together parliamentary leaders from member and partner countries.
Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla chaired the inaugural meeting and welcomed the visiting delegations, emphasising the importance of dialogue, mutual respect and cooperation among participating nations.
Addressing the gathering, Birla said the presence of parliamentary delegations from BRICS countries in India, the world’s largest democracy, offered an opportunity to reinforce their shared commitment to constructive engagement and democratic principles.
He said the forum reflected a collective belief in dialogue, mutual trust and respect for democratic values.
“The presence of the BRICS Parliamentary Cooperation in India demonstrates our shared commitment to dialogue, mutual respect, and our shared trust in democratic values,” Birla said.
BRICS Marks 20 Years of Parliamentary Engagement
Birla noted that the BRICS Parliamentary Forum is marking its 20th anniversary this year, highlighting the grouping’s expanding reach and its growing capacity to influence international relations and global developments.
He said BRICS countries together account for nearly half of the world’s population, cover approximately one-third of the global landmass and represent a substantial share of the global economy and international trade.
According to the Speaker, these factors underline the collective influence of the grouping and the responsibility its members share in addressing international challenges.
“BRICS countries may differ geographically, culturally, linguistically, and socially, but our shared responsibility toward democratic values and humanity binds us together,” he said.
Birla added that differences in geography, culture, language and social backgrounds need not prevent countries from working together towards common objectives.
Birla Welcomes Joint Statement at New Delhi Summit
Referring to the recent BRICS Summit held in New Delhi under India’s chairmanship, Birla highlighted the unanimous adoption of the joint statement by member nations, describing it as a significant achievement reflecting their collective commitment.
He thanked the participating countries for their cooperation in reaching the agreement under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s chairmanship.
The parliamentary forum is expected to provide a platform for representatives to exchange perspectives and explore practical avenues for cooperation on shared priorities.
Parliamentary Leaders From Member and Partner Countries Attend
The two-day forum is being held on October 26 and 27. Prime Minister Narendra Modi is also scheduled to attend the gathering and interact with leaders of the visiting delegations.
Participants include presiding officers and parliamentary leaders from BRICS member and partner countries, Union Ministers, Rajya Sabha Deputy Chairman Harivansh, presiding officers of state legislatures, Members of Parliament and other dignitaries.
The discussions are aimed at strengthening engagement among legislatures and advancing cooperation on issues affecting citizens across the participating countries.
